The guy behind the world famous online encyclopedia Wikipedia have also created Wikileaks, a forum where government employers gain leak classified information.

State employees traditionally turn to journalists whenever they want to publicize any files that their superiors have sought to keep secret. But wikileaks allow any government employee to leak anything without ever meeting any one from the press pool and in the age of Plamegate it might be better for both parties concerned if information were leaked from Wiki than, say, The Washington Post.

Well, it turns out that recently more than a billion dollars of American federal government reports were posted on Wikileaks [to see the reports]. The reports were prepared by the Congressional Research Service, an independent research arm of Congress, and although not classified they are still deemed semi-secret and not for public eyes.

Many of these reports had already been revealed, but never have CRS reports been made available in such numbers.

This is nothing big, no one is going to discover any shocking secrets about the U.S. government. Research reports are just mundane overviews of a myriad of American and international policy.

Take, for instance, this abstract on the U.S.’ role in Bosnia:

“An important issue is whether Bosnia is still important to US interests. Some say that pressing U.S. commitments in other countries and regions argue for transferring full responsibility for Bosnia to European Countries. Others believe that the United States still has a stake in Bosnias stability, as part of building a Europe whole and free, the overarching U.S. objective in the region.”

The point here is not the reports per se, but their availability to the public. Another one for government transparency.
