Last Tuesday’s historic election of Barack Obama as the first president of the United States was greeted by massive celebrations around the world from France to the down under nation of Australia.
But there was one country where festivities were not to be seen: Pakistan. Most Pakistanis know that Barack’s middle name is Hussein and that his father was a Muslim, but that does not concern them as a pledge Barack Obama made as a candidate.
Then candidate Barack stated that if the U.S. has intelligence about Al-Qeada operatives in Pakistan and if Pakistan did not act, the United States would violate Pakistani sovereignty and launch raids into the country.
The Bush administration has already embarked on such a tactic that has lead to the lose of many civilians. Such attacks have rallied radicals and angered moderates in the nation who do not want to see their nation’s sovereignty violated with impunity.
There is a great that Obama would increase such incursion to the great determent of Pakistani civilians. That is why in a recent 24 nation poll, Pakistan was one of only 4 nations polls where the majority of respondents stated that things under Obama would get worse.
Whether they will has yet to be seen, of course. But Pakistanis for now can take refugee in one thing Obama has said: the president-elect said last week that he will make resolving the dispute over Kashmir with India a top priority.
