It is a shame. I am a classical liberal who would normal fit right in the Republican party, but many people like me who are fiscally conservative are turned off by a party that seems to have a death wish.

The current strain in Republicanism right now is not conservativism or anything, but elementary anger. Republicans are simply angry, full of range at what they believe are condescending liberals who want to control their lives and are taking away their country. There is a lot of truth in that. But the anger is so poorly channeled. Instead of engaging in thoughtful debate and upholding prudent men and women to lead the party anew against the rebirth of American liberalism, many rank-and-file Republicans would rather take their cues from idiot and savage talk radio men like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. Instead of offering an alternative to liberal policies; Republicans prefer to joke about global warming and put “My Third Car is a Pirus” bumper stickers. Try talking to them about the Constitution and the need to end torture and they joke about going “water boarding” in Hawaii.

There support for Sarah Palin would be suicide. This woman may very well win the primary but she could never win a national election. Instead of being shocked at her gross ignorance - like believing that South African is a continent - and her abrupt resignation which reflects her inability to stand pressure - not a fine quality to be president; these Republicans instead embrace her a “common woman.” We tired that “common” garbage with Bush and what good did that do?

And then their are the conspiracy theories. Now, Democrats believe in as stupid, if not more, conspiracy trash like that Bush planned 9.11. But these people are fringe. But a large segment of the Republican party believes that Obama isn’t a real American but a foreigner born in Kenya. The U.S. Constitution declares that only a “natural born” citizen can be president.

Republicans - a lot of them - actually believe Obama is an illegitimate Kenyan - and Muslim, and here the demonstrate ignorance and racism at the same time - president planning to turn American Islamo-Socialist.

At a recent townhall meeting by Delaware Republican Congressman Michael Castle - a remaining moderate Republican in an increasingly homogeneous conservative party - a crazed woman stood up to denounce Obama as a Kenyan. If that was all we could dismiss it, after all crazy people show up at a lot of places; but watch as the Congressman is made to be the outcast and the psychopath is cheered on:

Is this party serious?
