At the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erodgan walked out of a panel discussion over a spat with Israeli President Shimon Perez over the recent Israeli massive bombardment and invasion of the Gaza Stripe that killed over 1,300 Palestinians, including over 400 children.
On Thursday night Washington Post columnist David Ignatius, a man known for his strong pro-Israeli advocacy, hosted a panel on Gaza and prospects for Middle Eastern peace. Mr. Ignatius gave each participant five minutes to speak, but allowed Perez to ramble on for 25 minutes as the president defended Israel’s onslaught against the Palestinians of Gaza.
When it was Mr. Erodgan’s turn to speak the Prime Minister was rudely cut off by Mr. Ignatius just as Mr. Erodgan was about to challenge Mr. Perez on Gaza. Naturally feeling that the moderator was being biased in allowing Perez 25 minutes and cutting off Mr. Erodgan at 12 minutes, less than half the time allowed to the former, when he has about to address the Gaza conflict, Mr. Erodgan walked out of the room and the panel continued without him.
Mr. Erodgan later when on to say, as quoted by the Financial Times, “I have great respect for Peres and for his age,” but what Perez said about Gaza was “not true because history refutes it and political science too”.
The Financial Times also quoted Secretary General of the Arab League Amr Moussa, another participant in the debate, as calling the moderation by Mr. Ignatius “simply unfair.”
Naturally it was unfair, American pro-Israeli pundits will always held to Israel and interrupt pro-Palestinian sentiment.
