In an increasingly environmental-conscience world, nations are keen to show off their green-credentials as a reflection of their responsible behavior in a world of global citizens.
Tunisia can now lay claim to the honor of being a good steward of the nation’s blessed beaches. The country’s Mediterranean coast is worthy of envy and has always been, more or less, properly attended too. Cleanliness does not necessarily equal environmental-efficiency, however.
Tunisia has taken action beyond keeping them pristine, to make its beaches environmentally-beneficial. Tunisia has brought several of its beaches inline with qualifications mandated by the “Blue Flag” movement.
“Blue Flag” is a movement launched the by Danish Foundation for Environmental Education to increase environmental education about beaches, establish environmentally-beneficial management of beaches and maintain water quality. If a beach or marina qualifies, it can then post a “Blue Flag” on its turf.
Five Tunisian beaches have qualified for the first time - “Zarzis, Korba town, Korba east, southern Hammamet and northern Hamamet, as well as the Hammamet marina.”
And several more Tunisian beaches are in a trial period pending final approval [or disapproval].
3200 beaches and marinas host the “Blue Flag” in several countries worldwide.
