The Germany VW has a cool, well-crafted image as a cool, slick and [depending on the model] exceedingly fun. No body would look at the Beetle and thing “now there’s a car a fascist would drive.”
But the VW was intended to be just that. Volkswagen means “people’s car” and it was commissioned by the Nazis to be the ideal for the Aryan race. The car a loyal Nazi would drive. Post-World War 2 VW has moved past that awful history and no body now associates the car with fascism. There are probably several Israelis that drive the VW.
But a 1964-circa commercial shows that it took VW somewhat of a while to craft a more colorful image:
The commercial is very Orwellian and anti-individualistic, a key feature of Nazism. The long columns of people lined up as if to cheer Mussolini, not the best image for a car. Such a fascist display leading up to the Beetle. No wonder a Lebanese fascist went with the Beetle to display his grotesque views:
