The news broke yesterday that somehow South Carolina’s Governor Mark Sanford had gone missing. Simply disappeared. The governor’s phone could not be called as it immediately went to voice mail reflecting that it was turn off. His staff admittedly that they have been unaware about his whereabouts for the last four days. Even his security detail had no answers.

CNN et al made it big news. After all, the story of the missing governor writes itself. It becomes even more intriguing to cover when that governor is deemed to be a little eccentric as Mark Sanford it. Sanford is fiscal hawk who turned down Obama’s stimulus money [the state legislature overrode his veto] and once walked into the state legislature with two piglets in hand to protest pork sending.
Where was the governor this entire time? Instead of going crazy with over the top statements about what his disappearance means [one paper said it is “enough to disqualify him from national office.”], the press could have just called his wife. They eventually did.
The governor was simply out hiking to “clear his head,” said Mrs. Sanford. I admire a man who just goes out for a hiking every now and then. Journalists today have such a smug sense of entitlement that they think they should be always in the know.
The state legislation was not in session and the governor wanted to relax a bit. He doesn’t have to inform the press, some of whom would have probably tacked along and irritated him.
Good for Sanford!
