Sarkozy: Niqab Is 'Sign of Debasement'French President Nicholas Sarkozy announced in front of the French parliament that the Islamic face covering - Niqab - [not to be confused with the veil: Hijab] is a “sign of [women] debasement” that should be outlawed in France.

Sarkozy stated that the French cannot expect the effort to isolate women from society the way such a face covering does. The French parliament will now establish a commission to review the Niqab and make recommendations. If it is banned, it will not be the first time the French government put restriction on Islamic wear.

Under President Chirac, at the behest of a similar commission it banned the Hijab from public schools. Although all religious symbols were banned, the law was clearly intended for the Hijab. But that law was just for public schools and did not apply to all arenas.

Although I am opposed to the Niqab and am irritated by the sight of it, because it is unfounded in Islam and is used to isolate women from society by misogynist men; nonetheless I oppose Sarkozy’s effort because banning women from wearing what they please on the streets is totalitarian. Nothing more than a fascist policy of police stopping women on the streets and forcing them to change their wear is what Sarkozy is calling for. Such a policy is the antithesis of a free society, it is opposed to the freedom in France that Sarkozy champions, will provoke a backlash by even secular French Muslims and should be opposed on principles of freedom and liberty.

The Niqab should be gradually phased out in all societies as nothing more than a vile manifestation of extremism and sexism, but the way to discourage the wearing of the Niqab is to speak out against it. And to integrate all Muslims into French society so that nearly all of them, and most of them already do, embrace universal values of liberalism, engagement and respect for women.

I saw a couple in the metro the other day: the women was wearing a Burqa and the man... SHORTS AND A T-SHIRT!

So let's not ban Burqas, but force the men, that make their wives put it on to wear one as well! We'll see how they react.

Muslims should follow local customs. If a westerner or whatever can't walk around Saudi Arabia in a bikini or a mini skirt, then an Arab can't be so covered up in France. It goes against local customs and belief.

but a westerner can not walk in a mini skirt in saudi arabia....evem a western woman is forced to put on these black abayas when in arabia....neither can one leave the christ on the neck, because it irritates the muslims.....a western man is afraid to walk on the streets of arabia because iff he by chance raises his glance and it will fall on some black thing moving there, he could have very serious problems with religious police...is this normal?

the arabs just want to impose their culture and way of life on the whole world. and it is not correct.

thus probably the french president is right.......

Forcing women not to wear hijab doesn't really work. They tried this experiment in Iran when Shah was ruling the country. Eventually people revolted and the next govt was Islamic.

That's why in the United States the hijab is perfectly legal, because our government respects its citizens. People just want to be free, including religious people, not just non-religious people. The current regime in Iran is oppressing women by forcing them to wear hijab, and eventually that government will fail too.

You may be right Jacob but the day when Americans or Europeans can go dressed like we are used to in Muslim countries is the day when I will be OK with burqas being worn in Europe and the USA. If they come to our countries, they should adapt to our customs.

Sarkozy has proved himself ignorant. Many Muslim women believe burkha is a religious requirement. And even if it wasn't women have the choice to wear what they want to wear. government has no business dictating what women should wear.

It is not ignorant to expect people to acculturate to their surroundings. The person has to adapt to the native population to be a full member of a society. If they are unable to adapt, they remain isolated and disenfranchised. No one is telling them to wear mini skirts and halter tops, they just want them to make an effort to blend in.

That is an Afghan custom from around 1840, it was never found any where in history before. Sheer veils were found on the harem girls in accent Persia but burka is pretty much just a Taliban thing.
