Russian Academic Predicts US Breakup

Russian academic Igor Panarin has found himself an attentive audience among the heavily Kremlin-influenced Russian media.

Mr. Panarin asserts that come fall 2010 there will no longer be a United States of America, but, rather, the US will split apart into a myriad of republics similar to the dissolution of the Soviet Union 18 years back.

It may appear initially easy to dismiss Mr. Panarin as a crack Russia academic seeking to stir controversy. But his theory is a decade old so this is not a momentary run at fame, and Mr. Panarin is a former KGB analyst along with being dean of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s academy for future diplomats.

He is often an invitee at Kremlin events and a guest on Russian media as an expert on Russian-U.S. relations.

As of late the media has become more receptive to the talk of a U.S. decline [one need not wonder why], and Mr. Panarin does as much as two interviews a day on the matter.

His theory, which Mr. Panarin insists is not underpinned by malice for he likes [or rather does not dislike] Americans, runs as
follows: Mass immigration, economic collapse and moral degradation will ignite a civil war in fall 2009 and the bottoming of the dollar. The U.S. will subsequently, by fall 2010, disintegrate into six blocks and foreign power will move in. California will be at heart of the new “Californian Republic, which will be under Chinese influence if not sovereignty. Likewise, Texas will be the center of “The Texas Republic” that will fall to Mexico or at least Mexican influence. Washington, D.C., and New York [and, presumable, the space between] will form the “Atlantic America”. Mr. Panarin states, using his prescient analysis, that unlike the C.R. and T.R., the A.A. will remain sovereign, though they might join the European Union.

Canada will then grab [with mall cops?] a cluster of northern American states forming “The Central North American Republic.” Hawaii will be a Japanese or Chinese protectorate. And, finally, Russia will “reasonable ... lay claim to Alaska; it was part of the Russian Empire for a long time.” How could it be anything but reasonable? ,but that does not keep Panarin from dreaming. A satellite image of Alaska hangs from his office wall. “It’s not there for no reason,” he admits.

Recognizing the incredibly assertions behind his theory, Mr. Panarin is sensible enough to state that there is only a mere “55-45% chance right now that disintegration will occur.”

Mr. Panarin states that he does not take any joy from predicting the grim future that awaits Americans. “One could rejoice in that process,” he stated. “But if we’re talking reasonably, it’s not the best scenario — for Russia.” Russia needs America as a trading partner and it negatively consequential for Russia when the breakup occurs. Though he does note that the demise of the U.S. will restore Russia’s standing in the world. Not that as a honorable academic he is considered with just neo-imperialist motive, after all Russia just wants Alaska for the extra hunting lands. The purchase of Alaska was ratified by the U.S. Senate on March 30, 1867 for $7.2 million [$111 million in today’s dollars].

Despite his fanciful rhetoric, the response of the Russian media has been a revelation once again of the deep anti-Americanism in Putin’s Russia. Russian broadcast have accompanied Mr. Panarin’s commentary with images of the homeless in America.

Mr. Panarin “reflects a very pronounced degree of anti-Americanism in Russia today,” says Vladimir Pozner, TV journalist in Russia. “It’s much stronger than it was in the Soviet Union,” he added.

Yes, this is possible, although it can’t come as soon as 2010. It will take maybe at least 5 years hence.

The rest of the academic’s analysis cum prediction cum prognosis is way too fantastic.

Obama is working WITHIN.

Besides, American diaspora is unimaginable.

But for it’s armed might ,The USA is already a failed state.I wonder how much longer their military machine can be sustained - or for how long more it can continue to sustain America.

I feel Alaska and Texas /Califoria will be liberated by it’s original owners earlier then most of the world expects.

Please, Hassan, elaborate on your perception that the U.S. is a failed state.

If the U.S. is a failed state, then the rest of the world, applying your standards, is a destitute, abysmal and unforgivable place.

The U.S. leads the world in every field of research, has the best universities, the most innovative companies, the most entrepreneurial culture, and, yes, we have unabashed military might. ’Nuff said.

As for Alaska, California and Texas. Alaska and most of California were fairly bought by the U.S. Only Texas was conquered via was not by the U.S. government, but by American settlers in Texas. And for awhile, Texas remained a sovereign nation due to the fact that the U.S. The Republic of Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 {this, republic, was by the way a lot smaller than present-day Texas] and was not admitted to the Union until July 4, 1845.

I meant to complete the thought: due to the fact that the U.S. refused to admit Texas.

Marco Villa,
Thank you for your detailed and -considering the situation- extremely polite reply.I shall make an attempt to give a detailed reply including my take on your version of American history in a blog this Sunday or latest by Monday. You will appreciate the subject requires a more detailed examination then is possible in a comment.

But consider this.

I know a man who was brought up in a loving ,respected and wealthy family. His father sent him to the best University he knew -in fact an American one. Then married him to the most beautiful and cultured girl in town. After his fathers death the guy inherited his portion of the fathers wealth;which was sufficient to set him up independently in big business and also enable him to live in the best properties with a ’mughals’ life style.
But the guy always felt the division of assets left him with much lesser then what his father had..and so he embarked on his quest to earn more.Being intelligent, determined ,as well as a man of means, there was little to stop him from achieving his objectives.

And so over the next 50-60 years he embarked on a ’purposeful and single minded’ journey to achieve his objectives. He worked hard ;but also where needed he wheeled and dealed and bought and fought and lied and cried and wined and dined his way to that objective. With the result that he made many enemies and few friends;and somewhere along the way between his wining and dinings ;leave alone his brothers and sisters - his wife and children also left him.

Today the man is in his eighties -and the richest man in the region. He lives in a palatial house with his third wife - who is as old as one of his grand children.Of course he has never had the pleasure of welcoming or even meeting his grand children - and the whole world knows his young wife hangs around only waiting for the old man to die so she can get his wealth.

Even the people of the town hate him for what he did to gain his excessive wealth;and the few who surround him are his employees and those hoping to gain from him.
Now for all his wealth and power would you call such a man a failed or a successful one?

The USA, the American people of all race colour and creed have given a great deal to the world, for the future it seems consolidation and fixing the leaky tiles at home seems to be the order of the day, than fixing the leaky tiles in many parts of the world. To sustain any form of military might drains a nation any nation. The Americans are strong people and I am sure that all would desire that the country stays as it is written ”The United States of America” It appears that Mr. Panarin is feeding a line that those anti American will buy into the myth, a subtle way of stirring the pot for further human suffering pitting man against man. Instead the world should work towards the acceptance of peace understanding of all cultures and working together for a sustainable world. For all people.

Right marie;the USA needs to put it’s own house in order -rather then trying to become an exploiter of the worlds weaknesses if it wants to survive. It has few real friends at the moment.Obama is a hope though-lets see if he can achieve the miracle.

Nope! Panarin’s prediction sounds way too preposterous. Unless it’s a big plan of all secret services, in stock for Russo-American would-be political geography, America will stay pretty much the same it is now. This prediction from Ernest Dempsey.
