Rhode Island to tax sex

These are tough times for America’s smallest state. Home to no more than 1 million people, Rhode Island is sandwiched in between Connecticut and Massachusetts. The state is ranked 46th in friendliness to business and records the highest unemployment rate in the country and additionally an above-average foreclosure rate.

Rhode Island to tax sex

Rhode Island currently has a budgetary deficit of $372 million. At 11.4% of the entire budget, such a gap is among the worst in the nation. The state plans to take several measures to turn around the dismal economic climate; becoming an clean energy and biomedical hub, along with slasing the 9$ corporate tax. The latter would move Rhode Island to 16th in business friendliness.

But if all else falls, their is always the backup of taxing - believe it or not - sex. In 1972, a state official proposed a $2 levy on sexual intercourse. A levy that only men would pay, which may sound sexist but then it is the men who are seeking the sex.

You may ask: how does the state enforce such a levy without violating privacy rights? Of course, the levy would not apply to normal couples. Rhode Island is one of two American states where prostitution is legal. The other is, of course, Nevada. The $2 tax would be paid at brothels only.

Why should the women pay such a levy? They shouldn’t, the men are sexing the sex and it is fitting that the levy would only be charges on them. But if a woman visits a male brother, make her pay!

Of course, I am opposed to the idea entirely because I oppose new taxes on principle.

Is there really such thing as a male brothel that is not for homosexuals?

I have never heard of such a thing, but I guess it is possible. If it is then women should pay the tax too.

Do the sex workers have to pay tax on their income?

Being woman, you are talking against the women. You know every time only a woman is blamed for prostitution but it’s the men who are actually responsible for his. Why should women pay for this? Government should tax the men only.

Are you kidding? Unless they are masturbating, it takes 2 to have sex, so both should pay. Why should women not have to pay tax just because they are women? They are not producing anything, they are not doing any work, they are not contributing anything to society but they are collecting money. It is not fair to the ones who do produce, work and contribute and pay their taxes.

I wish they would figure out a way to make drug dealers, hit men, arsonists, mobsters and all others who make a living from nefarious behavior pay taxes on it.

I know how we can make criminals pay taxes without legalizing their activities, get rid of income tax and make it outgo tax. Even hitmen have to eat.

You are very right. Ours is a very liberal society and government. Can you ever imagine the legalization of prostitution in India?

There's so much money to be made in these pointlessly illegal industries (drugs and sex) that it sort of boggles my mind that corporations aren't battering down the doors of the white house demanding the right to sell sex in Walmart ;)

I believe prostitution and drugs should be legal since it only harms people who participate in these acts and doesn't physically harm others.

Hey, how do they tax it? Is it a tax on the brothel owners or is it individual tax?
