In the end, it will be written that Israel, more than anyone else, did the most to ensure its demise. How? Israel’s own president Shimon Peres stated not long ago that without American support Israel could not much longer survive as a state. Israel has a powerful army and nuclear weapons, but it depends on American diplomatic support and military aid. The nation would grow even more isolated without US backing.
But that American support is dependent on bipartisan backing, Republican and Democratic. But with the advent of President Obama and the fierce counter reaction by Israel’s far-right government, Israel is becoming politicized. Liberals less likely to support, while Israel increasingly looks like a right-wing cause.
Obama has simply offered some meek words and mundane requests, but Israel’s haughty dismissal of even this has irritated the president and his liberal base and has made Republicans wise to what they view as a wedge issue to strip away prominent Jewish donors from the Democrats and into the Republican fold.
So when Obama recently called for the obvious, a peace based in principle on 1967 lines with the nuance of “agreed swaps”, the right-wing went crazy as if Obama had declared himself an anti-Zionist and Israel’s two-bit prime minister arrogantly called on Obama to recant.
This led the left to rally in defense of their president against the arrogance of a right-wing foreign leader, and the right-wing to play it for all its worth. Here is now the fund raising ad from insane Congresswoman and probable presidential candidate Michele Bachmann:

The polarization of Israel will breed a cleft in support between the right and left and make US backing more conditional and US aid eventually hard to come by, and Israel’s security will be imperiled all due to short-sighted Israeli hubris and right-wing politics as Israel’s behest.
