Israeli Likud Premier Benyamin “Bibi” Netanyahu was confronted by protesters while in London to meet with British counterpart Gordon Brown on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Netanyahu is head of a rightist government that has refused to agree to U.S. demands for a settlement freeze on occupied Palestinian land, or negotiating the status of occupied Arab East Jerusalem so as to allow the Palestinians to claim most of it as their capital, and his coalition encompasses the far-right Israel Is Our Home party which has played and stroked fifth-column-esque fears against Israel’s 1.3 million Arab citizen. Israel Is Our Home party head is Netanyahu’s Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman.
Such a coalition and policies have further undermined Israel’s image among Europeans and the general international community, including traditionally pro-Israel America.
A rally was organized 30 minutes prior to Netanyahu’s arrival at 10 Downing Street for his afternoon meeting. Due to the demonstration, Netanyahu had to use the back entrance where he was greeted by Prime Minister Brown and Israeli Ambassador to London Ron Prosor before security quickly guided them inside.
Hundreds of people were reported to have been at the rally. Demonstrators waved Palestinian flags and held signs proclaiming “Free Palestine,” “End the Siege on Gaza,” “Netanyahu’s A War Criminal [sic],” Jerusalem Is The Capital of Palestine,” among many others. Demonstrators also tied unsuccessfully to breach the security wall.
Netanyahu concludes his London trip on Wednesday after meeting U.S. President Envoy George Mitchell, who is the led U.S. peace negotiator.
