The King of Pop may be dead, but his music lives on. And not just the classics, but Sony (Jackson’s label) has tons of unreleased material that will now slowly be aired to the public.
The first is “This Is It” which is played at the end of the soon-to-be-released Jackson documentary titled, incidentally, “This Is It.” The film is about the rehearsal for Jackson’s final 50-night concert in London.
“This Is It” was recorded by Jackson alongside solely his piano. Sony has added a full soundtrack and backup vocals by his brothers and will release the single midnight on Sunday. The tape was found in a box shortly after Jackson’s death. The date of recording is uncertain, but Sony believes is was sometime during the marking of the 1991 “Dangerous” album. But it could have been years before that, even during 1979.
Sony claims that they have roughly 100 unreleased songs, which were completed by Jackson to varying degrees.
The label is going through and organizing the material. Although Jackson’s standing has declined in his final years, his death - as with Elvis and Sinatra - sparked a massive spike in album sales. The week after his death he had the three top albums and his “Number Ones” record is currently the top selling album of the year.
Jackson died with millions in debt, so his estate greatly needs the sales.
