Might Egypt's Gamble With Israel Lead to the Demise of the Regime?
[Outside the Egyptian embassy in Beirut]

The Egyptian government’s silence to the suffering of Palestinians at the hands of Israel, and the meeting of foreign ministers between both governments has convinced Arabs that Egypt is fully in support of the Israeli assault.

The Egyptian has already been supporting the Israeli-lead economic blockade of Gaza by keeping its border closed, and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak recently stated that the Egyptian border will be opened only with Israeli permission.

Such language and deeds has decisively turned the Arab world and the Arab diaspora against Egypt as much as against Israel.

Protesters in Washington, D.C., on Friday demonstrated outside the Egyptian embassy.

In Beirut, Lebanese security had to stand guard outside the Egyptian officials and create a barrier after demonstrators previously placed Palestinian flags alongside the embassy walls and threw shoes inside the compound.

The Egyptian government has thus far been indifferent to such protests, even from official voices. The Egyptian president told Arab leaders, via their foreign ministers gathered in Cairo for an emergency session of the Arab League, to all but mind their own business.

Hamas is the sister organization of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, the strongest opposition movement in the country. The Egyptian president might view Israel’s war with Hamas as a proxy war between Egypt and the Brotherhood.

If so, Mubarak may has greatly miscalculated. The already incredibly unpopular 27-year old regime has been weakened at home and aboard for its support of Israel. The Brotherhood will only emerge stronger once the dust settles in Gaza, regardless of whether Israel is able to uproot Hamas.

The regime could once incite anti-Israel sentiment to distract the masses from state’s repression and abysmal failures - 40% of Egyptian live on no more than $2 a day.

But now the regime has lost its only card of legitimacy.

AS a sign of the times for the Mubarack regime, in the Beirut protests an Egyptian man was applauded as he burned his passport.

What hypocritical drivel.

The only reason you wrote this scurrilous piece of inflammatory armchair propaganda is because you know full well that Egypt is one of the ONLY Mideast countries which is genuinely trying to work for peace here.

File under rabble-rousing-American-of-Tunisian-origin-who-doesn’t-have-the-guts-to-defend-his-OWN-origins,

Let alone anyone else’s.

Advice?

Stay in the USA.

The pay’s better and your net access isn’t censored........

Cretin.

What? I have idea what your saying. First, the Egyptian government is not working toward peace in the Middle East. Egypt is no longer the main Arab broker; Saudi Arabia and Qatar are. Second, that wasn’t the point of the article. There is nothing inflammatory in my article, I am simply offering analysis that Egypt is very unpopular now and the regime will walk out of this conflict less popular. What is so inflammatory about that? Chill out! And what do you mean by defending my own origins. When have I denied by origins. On the contrary, I have spent dozens of IB posts defending Muslims and Arabs. What gives with the advice for staying in the USA? Where did you read that I considered leaving? Reading your comments, it almost appears that you’re responding to another post. I’ve got me lost.

FYI it’s abroad.. not aboard... have seen it in several of your posts.

Mubarak is no saint, but at least his government believes in Israel’s right to exist, unlike most other arab countries, including Palestine.

Egypt was also ”unpopular” when it signed the peace treaty with Israel in 1979. Many of the talking heads were predicting Egypt’s downfall back then, but it didn’t happen then, and it’s unlikely to happen now.

Are you sure that this article isn’t more along the lines of wishful thinking?

”I’ve got me lost” you say.

Right.

You are, effectively, lost.

Your ”post”, which informs us that Egypt is a vassal of Israel, finishes by telling us that ”now the regime has lost its only card of legitimacy. AS a sign of the times for the Mubarack regime, in the Beirut protests an Egyptian man was applauded as he burned his passport.”

Now don’t start playing childish semantic linguistic games with me. Your menacing conclusion is clear, as are your intentions.

”Egypt will be overturned and its days are numbered”.

You have no intellectual decency, no moral clarity, and even less humanity.

(You are cowardly hypocritical, if you prefer).

As for your hypocritical safe haven in the USA, you know as well as I do that you have to be careful who knows who you are on IB, because if people DID know about your ”opinions”, you’d have to think about moving back to Tunisia. And that isn’t a good idea now IS it!!

your syrupy words are part of something that I do not tolerate.

Let’s get straight here. I came onto this site to do something. So did you.

I came here to write and promote peace because my privileged lifestyle means I would like to share it with everyone.

You came here, from the same privileged background, to, sow seeds of destruction that you do not assume personally.

You are a shit-stirring self-aggrandizing computer-screen bully and agitator.

Palestine, Israel, and the Egyptians, do not need your peurile youtube opinions.

You do not want peace. You are a frustrated person. Go see a shrink.

The decent people on this site do not need you.

The difference between you and I is that I shall be back to visit your posts often. You shall NOT like some of my comments. Whereas if you go visit my page, there’s nothing that you would find offensive.

CLEAR?????

Michael, you are so absurd I do not even know where to begin.

You put in quotations, as if to attribute to me, ”Egypt will be overturned and its days are numbered”.

This appears no where in my post or subsequent comments. Again, I did not predict the fall of the Mubarak regime, all I am saying it that is it more unpopular than usually. And, yes, Egypt, like all Arab regimes including Jordan, do rely on stirring public angry against Israel to distract from their awful rule.

Seriously, YOU need to see a shrink. You’re so insane with you self-righteous condemnations, and no one is interested in you efforts to enlighten. Calm down.

and, finally, you write: ”As for your hypocritical safe haven in the USA, you know as well as I do that you have to be careful who knows who you are on IB, because if people DID know about your ”opinions”, you’d have to think about moving back to Tunisia. And that isn’t a good idea now IS it!!”

Excuse me? No, I do not have to worry one bit. I am an American citizen, you douchbag! There is nothing that I have written that is illegal, and if it was I would not be deported to Tunis, you idiot, I would charged in my country: America. What do you think you scare me with you stupid threats? Please, by all means go to the FBI and tell them there is a raging pro-Palestinian, anti-Zionist pontificating on Instablogs.

Who said you were going to be deported Marco LOL!!

And I do NOT doubt that you are an American citizen.

Marco, do you think that anyone would denounce you to the FBI?

Of course not, and I didn’t imply it.

You are, of course, entitled to your ”opinions”, but I don’t think they stick with the idea of what America is.

I was talking in violently metaphorical terms.

Which is what YOU do.

It’s so funny to see how you like using violently metaphorical terms to express YOURself, and what you wish and predict for Israel, but when it comes to you receiving the same egaggerated rhetoric, it doesn’t quite go down as well, does it!!!!

What goes around comes around Marco.

Hmmmmmm

Can someday tell MD about the assassination of Sadat after the peace agreement with Israel?

An Egyptian government did fall and Sadat is not mourned by his people till this day.

For the record, I think Sadat was doing the right thing for Egypt and his death was tragic.

I know all about the assassination of Anwar Sadat, thank you. He was assassinated by the same kind of Muslim extremists that make up Hamas today (the Muslim Brotherhood).

BTW, did you know that the word ”assassin” and its derviatives come from the Arabic? Why do you think that is? Generally, a language culture invents words for new concepts invented in that culture.

There are many elements not taken into consideration when you simply say, and I would have rather seen a quote here, that Mubarak recently stated that the Egyptian border will be opened only with Israeli permission.

Elements such as articles from the peace treaty signed between Egypt and Israel, which revolved around the mutual recognition of each country by the other.

Next:
The European Union Border Assistance Mission Rafah, states clearly that any management regarding the Rafah crossing is to be in liason between the Palestinian Authority (i.e NOT Hamas), Israeli and Egyptian authorities.

So as long as Hamas doesn’t let the PA control the border, the agreement is in violation and the borders SHOULD NOT BE EXPECTED TO BE OPENED BY EGYPT.

According to the EUBAM, the opening of Rafah crossing is dependent on agreement being reached between Palestinian factions, and also between the PA and the Government of Israel.

The EUBAM does not RECOGNIZE Hamas and has a no-contact policy with Hamas.

Wow!! I thought facts didn’t EXIST anymore!!!!

Phew, it’s so nice to read some.

I was beginning to miss them.

I thought facts had been replaced by rumour, personal opinion, false information and unattribuable comments.

Thanks for these facts Sarah.

Bedtime.

I’m going to dream. Not of sheep.

No.

Of FACTS!!
