Man in Berlin Hospital Cured of AIDS

The New York Times reported on November 14, 2008, that doctors at a Berlin hospital were able to cure a man of AIDS by injecting him with transplanted blood stem cells from a person who is resistant to the virus (the article did not mention, by the person who is resistant to the virus is probably a descendant from a surviving family from the Black Plague as they have been known to be resistant to AIDS).

But will such a treatment mean the end of AIDS? Unfortunately no.

The act of injecting someone with stem cells is still very risky with 10-30% of patients dieing as a result. The process entails destroying one’s immune system with radiation and drugs. Further, the chances of finding someone with a proper tissue match and a resistant to AIDS is extremely rare.

“It’s very nice, and it’s not even surprising, but it’s just off the table of practicality,” stated Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in the United States.

But the fact that the man has been AIDS-free for 20 months without using any anti-retroviral drugs keeps up the hope that for the millions, particularly in Africa, that suffer from AIDS, there is a chance that a cure might be realized soon enough. Injecting genetically re-engineered stem cells might be the key.

This truly is a ray of hope for the people suffering from this disease.

Any cure isn't worth until it's cheap enough to be used in the third world. obviously it's great if people in the west can get better treatment, but it's not world changing.

here's a cure for aids - persuade African priests to stop saying condoms are evil

The other side of the coin. I appreciate the way new developments in this issue is popping up in a leapfrog style. Those having aids must have a chance to live life again.

Well, at least now they have a starting point, which could be (or could be not...we never know) developed later on into something affordable for those who cannot pay.

If this is a joke, it isn’t funny. Not only did the Africans (and their monkeys) bring the virus but now their priests are stopping a cure to be found? They must be so omnipotent as to stop even men in Berlin from using condoms.

What a bloody racist virus we have!

A cure that has worked on only one person and is ”off the table of practicality”? Doesn’t sound like a promising chance.

Actually I heard about stem cells being used to cure children with cerebral palsy as well, and it has worked nicely with some people...So I guess that IS a promising cure if further studied and developed... :)

Hmmm, i feel like I’m answering everybody’s comments here even though I’m not who put the article up.

Sorry for that Marco.. but the subject is real interesting :D

I’d like to share in the promise too but not when the owners of the procedure itself are giving it that slim chance already.

And what about the cases of those who have done several years ”AIDS-free” without the ARVs? Shouldn’t someone be incorporating them in their search or should they (as has become routine) be dismissed as crackpots/denialists?

Well, I honestly don’t have much info about the subject of HIV, so I can’t really argue much about it... but what I like about this and find promising is the use of Stem Cells... What I find interesting here is that it is not strictly used for one problem, but they are actually researching other possibilities of how they can use it...I know people who are taking Stem Cells once their babies are born, just in case anything goes wrong later on in life...This, I find Interesting...
Peace :)
