While Western media expresses shock that the Iranian regime can be so repressive, Western firms has written the very software that Iran uses to censor free expression.
The Wall Street Journal reports:
The Iranian regime has developed, with the assistance of European telecommunications companies, one of the world’s most sophisticated mechanisms for controlling and censoring the Internet, allowing it to examine the content of individual online communications on a massive scale.
Will Western firms now demand that their companies stop engaging in such ignoble business? It is very unlikely that Western countries will cut into the profit margins of the companies in defense of Iranians.
That is because the West does not really care about Iranians. These protesters are only receiving sympathy because they are protesting against an anti-Israel government. That is how the West evaluates protests: against anti-Western government [Good], against pro-Western governments [Bad].
This is not about principles or anything so lofty. This is pure cynicism. The Iranians demonstrating are courageous and deserve our support, but the hypocrisy of the Western media and governments is such beyond grotesque.
