Hulu vs. YouTube

Prior to YouTube video web-watching was an infrequent occurrence. YouTube revolutionized the Internet once again by giving anyone with Internet access the ability to post videos and watch an infinite amount.

YouTube has even affected American elections. In the state of Virginia, incumbent Republican Senator George Allen lost his reelection bid in part because he made a gaffe that was caught on camera and then posted on YouTube.

Google eventually bought YouTube for around $4 billion. That was a great overestimation of its values. YouTube generates very little in the way of profits. Many corporations are not keen to advertise for YouTube given that their ads could be posted alongside unsavory videos and many media companies refuse to advertise any of their content on the site for disputes over copy rights. Those same media companies are also suing YouTube for unauthorizes postings of copy righted material.

While YouTube launched mainstream video web-watching, it was a newcomer co-sponsored by NBC and Fox, Hulu, that has lead the way in money making in web-watching; that’s the conclusion of a recent article on Hulu from The Economist.

Hulu offers content from two-media giants and a host of others through a easy-to-use and clean format. Because it is a closed-source that offers only official content, advertisers do not have to worry about being patched up with anything unseemly. Instead, advertisers have responded enthusiastically to Hulu’s format that allows them to place ads within shows. Hulu’s video browsing is incredibly crisp, in contrast to the more low-quality images via YouTube. Although YouTube is starting of offer HD videos.

Hulu’s also offers full-length movies and television shows that YouTube could not do so without being sued. Although YouTube still receives more visitors than Hulu, Hulu is quickly catching up. In the month of December, over 250 million videos were watched on the site.

And it is now the pioneer YouTube that is placing catch-up. YouTube is signing a deal with MGM Studios to start offer movies a la Hulu.

There is often a lot of hype over new Internet companies. YouTube was no exception. But companies exists to make money, and YouTube needs to figure out how to that just as Hulu was pioneered profits in web-watching.

why are we comparing hulu to youtube? it's like apples and oranges. hulu has established itself as THE place for legal, free online television programming whereas youtube has established itself as the place for amateur video and blogging. both work well for their intended audience......there is no way one should compare these two.

Hulu Vs Yutube???? this is stupid comparison. Is this merely just for page views? Hulu is OWNED by NBC/Universal which already has the video advertisers (television remember that?) and is merely offering them a new platform.

I agree Hulu is just nothing but a television for your computer. Youtube is more interactive. Still, I must concede that I watch more Hulu than Youtube. Mainly for Daily Show and Colbert Report.

The problem though is that it is hard to monetize amateur video - which is why hulu is doing better in that department.

Hulu runs ads during their content; YouTube does not. It's as simple as that. therefore, I think youtube is great, more interactive or god knows what not and wouldn't want to see it change very much, but if it isn't profitable then it probably will.

I also really like the video player, it seems a lot more user friendly than most of the main network sites and it will switch traditional tv viewers to online viewers. Youtube already has a captive audience, and hulu wants to attract them along with the ones alienated by youtube.

comparing Hulu to Youtube, i think, is nothing different to what it is in the case of Facebook and MySpace. they maay seem similar but really dfferent, even though there is competing overlap.

I think Hulu is right to follow and make sure that their brand is properly represented wherever their content goes. Lastly, Hulu’s success does not hinge on becoming more popular than Youtube, it just needs to be highly profitable (wouldn’t hurt to be more profitable than Youtube though).

yes there is literally no need to compare these two...Youtube serves it's purpose. Hulu attracts a different kind of viewer so they'll both do well. Youtube will always be where people go to promote themselves or air their views, share family videos, etc. Nothing will ever make that obsolete because people like hearing themselves talk too much. So there's room enough for both and they'll both prosper. ket.
