It is now clear that the Iranian and Syrian backed Lebanese militia-cum-party Hezbollah was planning on using Egypt as a base to aid the Palestinians.
When Egyptian officials first reported that the uncovered a Hezbollah plot in Egypt, Hezbollah stayed silent and prominent voices in the Arab media accused Egypt of seeking to undermine Hezbollah, particularly in the wake of widespread Egyptian unpopularity in the Arab world after the Mubarak regime supported the Israeli assault on Gaza. Israel’s air attack and invasion of Gaza killed over 900 Palestinian civilians, over 400 of them children.
But then Hezbollah’s leader Hasan Nasrallah took credit for the man held captive by Egypt as indeed a Hezbollah member whose goal was to aid the Palestinian cause in Gaza. “If it is a crime to help the Palestinians, then I am guilty,” Nasrallah defiantly stated.

The Egyptians stay that Hezbollah was trying to do more than aid the Palestinians, but also stir trouble in Egypt through the planting of bombs. But a transcript of the captured Hezbollah man in his discussion, if one can call it that, states that he had strict not to attack even Israelis on Egyptian soil. His purpose was to facilitate arms to Hamas via underground tunnels.
Though Hezbollah may have been planning some attacks on ships passing through the Suez Canal.
What has recently been revealed is that Israel’s Mossad and America’s C.I.A. aided the Egyptian and uncovering this cell. How likely is that?
We’ll have to wait for the history books.
