Hate Crimes Against Muslims in Sweden

Södertälje, a town in Sweden, has been a beacon to the rest of the world in that it, unlike the United States, has taken in a great number of Iraqi refugees. So much so that the city has been dubbed “Little Baghdad.”

But unfortunately the initial warm reception that Iraqis, both Muslims and Christians, received was short-lived. In recent months, the refugees have been subject to hate crimes that include actual physical attacks to urine being left in the mail-boxes of Muslims.

One non-Muslim Syrian woman, obviously not an Iraqi refugee, had her home egged and racist language written on her door. The first attacks targeted only Muslims, but then Christian became the victims of such bigotry as well.

Interestingly the attacks are not coming from native xenophobic Swedes, or at least not most of them, but from other immigrants. Christian immigrants, whether motivated by resentment of Muslims competing for the same jobs or just outright bigotry, have been lashing out at Muslims.

Not all of the attacks are coming from thuggish youth, the urine pouring into Muslim mailboxes was done by adults.

Some of the victims fear that the continuing violence will mean that they must eventually, for the safety of their children, leave the area: “Most of the families in Hovsjö are good families and I don’t want to move away from here. But for the kids own good I hope their parents do something before it’s too late,” said the aforementioned Swedish-Syrian woman.

What a pity.Tough for them;but refugees every where have a tough time surviving. Most humans prefer to act like beasts in any part of the world.do you know the greatest religious massacres and persecutions have been of christian Vs Christians in Europe....And the Christian Vs Jews again in Europe.

I have never commented on my own piece, a comment that is not a response to a reader’s comments, but I felt the need to today after seeing the picture that was posted (by an editor, not me) along with my story. Why the image of veiled Muslim women crying? Is every story about Muslims supposed to evoke images of their suffering? Why the cliched photo?

I know that the person who posted that photo did not mean any malice, but the fact that even a person of good will would think Muslims and then post that photo attests to the fact that stereotypes about Muslims persist even among those whom are not Islamophobic. It is combating these stereotypes that will end the bigotry against Muslims detailed in my piece.

EXCELLENT comment..I read your comment and entered without reading the story (I will be going back to reading the post)..Stereotypes, conscious or not, good willed or not ARE WRONG...

WE ARE ALL HUMANS.....PERIOD.
From there we can go into goods and bads, etc...but as a personal, individual basis..Not as a whole.
