GM Going Bankrupt?

General Motors, one of America’s failing automakers, will be going back to Washington cap-in-hand asking for more bailout money. The automaker received a bailout at the end of last year and is currently in the process of a painful restructuring that GM managers say will make it more profitable. But it still needs more federal aid to make it through to being profitable once more.

It should not get anymore money and shouldn’t have gotten the first bailout. General Motors has a problem with the unions that isn’t going to go away with money. The fat cat-run United Auto Workers has forced GM to the brink of bankruptcy through their selfish and short-sighted demands for un-affordable health care and pension plans, and wages that exceed productivity. And what did the UAW that is now asking for public sympathy do whenever GM refused union deals it knew were harmful to the long-term prospects of the company? Union goons rioted!

The Union would very much like the American people to pay for a bailout so that it doesn’t have to make any cuts. To hell with them! If they don’t want to sacrifice then I hope they find themselves out on their ass!

If the UAW refuses to agree to wage and benefits cuts, then GM without a bailout will fall into bankruptcy. And that would be a victory for freedom. I hope it will come to that, but, of course, it won’t. The Democrat party is a wholly-owned subsidiary of America’s unions and will never turn down an offer.

I thought that bankruptcy was not an option, so let me get this straight, they took the bailout and now they want to declare bankruptcy. So does that mean they won't have to pay that money back.

I swear this country is going down the tubes with an anchor attached.

I will never ever buy another GM, Ford or Chrysler car as long as the UAW continues to build them.

Yes absolutely, GM and Chrysler should fail. And you know what will replace them better younger companies built by vibrant young individuals with a real eye to the future; not old greying dinosaurs that still don't know how to send email and still refer to online life as "The Internets"

What’s good for General Motors is good for the USA?

In the 50s that slogan was so common that it was parodied by a cartoonist named Al Capp in his L’il Abner comics. Then Broadway and finally Hollywood made it a jingle you could sing.

When my parents inherited GM stock from my grandparents it sold at $85. By the time my sentimental father realized he had to sell it was $58 and That was 30 years ago. Today GM sells for $2.50!

The fat-cats running the unions up in the rust belt have notoriously been lining their pockets and brag that they force employers to provide the best benefits for their workers.

The best benefit is, of course, a job. Unless things change, the open shop foreign companies that set up factories in the traditionally non-union South will continue to have such an advantage that the ”Big 3” will not be able to compete. Oh, wait! They can’t compete now!

Since I can remember riding in our family’s ’53 Studebaker and loved the pushbutton transmission on my grandfather’s ’56 Desoto I am old enough to remember when there were a lot more American car companies. Will I see ALL of them fold?

I don’t know, but perhaps it’s significant that after a lifetime of buying American, I have a new Toyota and a very old Nissan.

It would take an exceptional change to make me ”go back”.
