Chicago wants to host the Olympic Games in 2016, which would be a first for the Windy City. Its Olympic committee was spent nearly $50 million in marketing and tomorrow we’ll know if it was worth it as voting for the Games takes place.
In an effort to boost Chicago’s bid, First Lady Michele Obama, Chicago star Oprah and President Barack Obama have headed to Copenhagen to lobby for their city. Nice to know Obama has no other pressing concerns.
This whole thing is stupid and a nation like America should be beyond such high-level lobbying for the Olympics as if we are Rising China needing to introduce ourselves to the world. America has hosted the Olympics several times. We’ve been introduced. Nuff’ Said.
And Chicago is not Barcelona. It is not a poorly known city needing a spotlight jumping-off point. Everyone in the world knows Chicago. Given that Chicago should not host the Games for two reasons:
1) The Olympics is a money-loser. The tourist revenue does not cover the costs of the Games. Toronto just finished paying off its costs for the Games it hosted in 1976. 1976! That’s three decades hence! Granted, Canada only gets money from selling bags of ice but still. Why should Americans pay billions in taxes so that athletes can swim and play volleyball in Chicago? It isn’t worth the costs.
2) Rio, another contender, is an infinitely better city. I visited Chicago this summer, for the first time; it is a beautiful city but not very animated and you can’t swim in the Chicago River or in the lake (the part of it in front of the city). Simply, Chicago may be fine for the Winter Olympics but it isn’t the ideal city for the Summer Games.
Rio, on the other hand, is a Summer city. I’ve never been to Rio, but I’ve many friends from there and in photos it never fails to amaze me. Ipanema in the shadow of Humaita is simply breathtaking. The mountains coming out of the sea, there isn’t a better backdrop for the Olympics. Rio stays up, Brazilians are beautiful, and Brazil knows how to party. It’s hands down. Rio is simply a better, funnier and more entertaining city. Chicago is too stall, the Olympics in Rio would make a great city even more festive. Can’t you imagine just how fun the Olympics Games in Rio will be?!
So, here’s to hoping for Rio. And if Rio loses, at least we’ll have the World Cup in Brazil in 2014.
