Former CIA Director's Anti-Semitic Rant

A new book on America’s foreign policy in the Middle East, Patrick Tyler’s A World of Trouble, continues an event where supposedly former CIA Director George Tenet yells about “the Jews” trying to undermine him.

George Tenet was at the Saudi Ambassador to the U.S. Prince Bandar bin Saud’s home in the Saudi capital of Riyadh. Drunk on scotch beside Bander’s pool, Tenet shouted that certain Bush administration were trying to lay the WMD fiasco on him. He called this men simply “the Jews

(From the book)A servant appeared with a bottle. Tenet knocked back some of the scotch. Then some more. They watched with concern. He drained half the bottle in a few minutes.

They’re setting me up. The bastards are setting me up,” Tenet said, but “I am not going to take the hit.”

According to one witness, he mocked the neoconservatives in the Bush administration and their alignment with the rlght wing of Israel’s political establishment, referring to them with exasperation as, “the Jews.”

Tenet may have been referring to Elliot Abrams at the National Security Council and David Welsch at the State Department, two hawkish Jewish official with ties to the Israeli right-wing Likud party. Although Abrams and Welsch are neo-conservatives who favor a hard line approach to Israel, most Bush administration officials do, a list that included the Muslim official, now U.N. Ambassador, Zalmay Khalidizad.

It was clearly antisemitic on behalf of Tenet to first single out Jewish officials as the only ones who would undermine him to save their skin and then to further make their faith the focus, rather than their ideology.

In a footnote, the author Tyler writes that Tenet initially denied ever even staying at Bendar’s home and then retracted that, but denied he had said such a thing at the pool. “He disputed the remarks attributed to him and denied that his memory might have been affected by the amount of alcohol he was reported to have consumed on top of a sleeping pill,” Tyler wrote.
