The Walt Disney Company has spent $11 million to buy 14 acres of land in the newly-opened National Harbor in plans to build a theme-based hotel.

The National Harbor is the largest along America’s East Coast and opened with great fanfare. But then came the economic recession and most of the housing units in the Harbor have yet to be sold. Disney’s venture came as good news to the Harbor’s president who personally lobbied Disney to build in the site.
The investment is also, of course, good news for Prince George’s Country, Maryland; the home to the National Harbor.
Disney has not released any plans for its development but only announced that it will be a construction of significant size that will leave a clear Disney mark in the nation’s capital. Even the theme of the hotel has not been announced. This is not the first time Disney has announced plans for the capital area. Decades ago, in the 1970s, the iconic company announced plans to build a history-based theme park near a Civil War battlefield in Manassas, VA. The plan eventually came to naught after locals and city officials moved to block the park. Disney’s ambitions are obviously less ambitions this time. A hotel is not going to cause protests by neighbors who would hear the disruption of daily life from tourists.
The nation’s capital may not be so happy about Disney’s successful second foray. The National Harbor is quickly developing as a prominent conference center that may eventually draw business away from D.C.’s own position are a conference hub.
The Harbor is situated along the Potomac right across from the capital.

Disney now has several non-theme park resorts around the world. Look up also Disney's Vero Beach and Disney's Hilton Head Resorts.
