There is an obnoxious current in contemporary American discourse. Every time any public figure says something off the cuff that is even remotely un-PC some a*@#$%e somewhere demands an apology.
Last night, President Obama made history as the first sitting president to be on the Tonight Show. Jay Leno joked with Obama about his bowling; the candidate famously threw a gutter ball during the election campaign. Obama said he had been working on his game in the White House’s alley, but still wasn’t good enough and that his skills would only qualify him for the “Special Olympics.”
Then next morning Joe Kennedy - fmr. governor of Massachusetts and son of Robert F. Kennedy - demanded that Obama apologize of the supposed offense he caused. The Kennedy’s are very active in the Special Olympics, the games were started by one of their in-laws the Shirvers.
I don’t know if Obama has issued such an apology par Joe’s request. That is not so much the point. What is annoying here is this constant effort to end any off the cuff discussion in America. Some people are way too uptight.
But what makes this particular event even more gulling is that Obama did not even say anything offense. He was joking that his ability to play bowling was below that of the normal person. In short, Obama was a bowling handicap. Isn’t the Special Olympics are game dedicated to those with handicaps. It wasn’t that Obama was making fun of the game, it such said that his own abilities will place in the Special Olympics because he would meet their qualification of limited abilities. He was just making note of the whole point of the Special Olympics. Why is that so offensive?
Obama should not apologize, Joe Kennedy is a douchbag who probably just want media time. And if anyone is going to apologize it should be Joe for his remarks praising the Venezuelan socialist thug Hugo Chavez.
