Australia Kills 50million KangaroosLet Peta have a field day with this bit of news.

Australia’s Treasury Minister Ken Henry has recently stated that over the last 10 years the government’s allocation of permits for the commercial slaughter of the nation’s iconic Kangaroos has lead to over 50million of them being hunted.

50million. That’s 5million a year! It is incredible that commercial hunters could catch that many Kangaroos - which are not lazy creatures - and be able to process them. 50million chickens which can be held in cramped quarters and do not require hunting is one thing, but Kangaroos is quite a feat.

Why so many dead Kangaroos? As stated, this is the official tally (many, no doubt, are killed illegally and often just for sport) and are killed only under government law for for-profit purposes. For their meat, to be exact:

He recently cited the granting of permits over the past decade that have allowed the commercial slaughter of 50m kangaroos “primarily to give household pets a bit of variety in their diet”.

Australian dogs apparently like Kangaroo meat with biscuit branch. Presumably, Australian people do not eat Kangaroos, at least not mainstream. Any Australian on IB: do the people there eat Kangaroos?

Peta’s members may call this now the worst Holocaust ever. A genocide no less and seek to bring war crimes and crimes against humanity charges against successive Australian governments. ‘O the angst!

Australians kill Kangaroos because there is a large amount of them, and they are kept from an exploding population. (as far as I know)

Ever driven in Canberra? The fu***rs are everywhere. It's like running the gauntlet everytime you go somewhere. i like to see a few roos sitting beside the road. I don't like them running in front of my car on a daily basis

This reminds me of the slaughter of the American buffalo, shot from passing trains for "sport".
the Australians have telescopic sights and spotlights? The kangaroo are sitting ducks.
Australians have a long, mixed love /hate with these marsupials.

I always wonder where all this sympathy by the animal lovers is when humans are being culled in places like Darfur.

Note that kangaroos are pretty much seen as pests in Australia, and they have overpopulation problems from a lack of natural predators. They even stage mass kangaroo cullings to control their numbers around major population centers.

Yes, many Australians eat Kangaroos. In fact, I know a few Australians who simply love roo meat. Many find Kangaroo meat tastier than mainstream meat like beef or chicken.

Also, Kangaroo meat is very healthy. They feed naturally in the wild, run in vast expanses in the outbacks and thus have very less fat content unlike farm reared beef that is mainly fed on corn.

Also, Kangaroo meat is more expensive than beef or chicken in Australia.

I personally have tasted Kangaroo meat on a few occasions and found it simply delicious.

According to the US Dept of Agriculture they slaughtered 34.4 million head of cattle in 2008 - not counting cattle butchered for farmers use. Whales and fish numbers are showing some species getting closer to extincion.
However, in Australia the Kangaroo is on the increase due to farmers using dams for their beef industry (making water more regularly available).
The irony is Cows(hooves) are more likely to deplete our type of soils and need all sorts of injections, have fattier meat, and acutally use more water.
Kanagroos on the other hand can use the foliage more economically, can Stop their pregnancy at will- until food and water is available- then make up for it (they can have 3 babies at different stages of development at any one time), are kinder to our older soils, has lean meat and can not run backwards.
The utter stupidity of the argument that we not eat our National Emblem is obvious when you consider that ALL animals were revered at some point in time. (as they should always be). Large parts of Australia have been in drought for 10 years, farming kangaroos would allow farmers to use their resources more judiciously.
