A new poll conducted by the Pew Research Center revels an alarming belligerency in the American public. Apparently, several years of agonizing war in Iraq (and thousands of American casualties; hundreds of thousands of Iraqi deaths as well but most Americans do not consider non-White deaths) and growing difficult in Afghanistan and the question of a surge of tens of thousands of U.S. troops in Afghanistan, and bombing in Pakistan has not done much to dissipate the American urge for bombings and war. Add to this the growing U.S. debt and it is outstanding that Americans would even consider a third war (to say nothing of the U.S.’ reputation in the Muslim world since this would be the third invasion of a Muslim nation in less than a decade).
No nation on the world threatens war on others as much as the United States, the self-righteous self-image of Americans notwithstanding.
Granted, the new poll states that 63% of American believe negotiations should be tired (who are the ones opposed to diplomacy?). But an almost equal number (actually more at 64%) believe they will not work (which may be true).
61% then state that Iran must be stopped from developing nuclear weapons even if military action need be taken. Americans seem to believe that it is not even debatable that Iran be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons.
So recap: Afghanistan War, Iraq War and War against Iran if they have the temerity to demand their right to nuclear technology. You think that after the inability to find WMDs in Iraq they would be skeptical of their government’s claims. But that would require critical thinking, and Americans are, well, . . . 61% are gun-ho for another war in the Middle East. And then they wonder why gas prices are so high!
