20% of American Women Are Abused

A recent study by the Family Violence and Prevention Fund has once again shown that the United States is still one of the most misogynistic nations in the world.

A shocking 20% of American high-school aged women report being beaten or sexually abused by a date. 8% report being forced to have sex by a boyfriend. 40% of girls aged 14-17 years know someone who has been hit by a boyfriend.

Every year, 4.8 million American women, according to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, suffer rape and/or physical abuse from an intimate partner.

The news only gets worse. The Justice Departments’ Bureau of Justice records 1,181 American women killed by a boyfriend or husband in 2005. That is three American women a day.

Not only are the statistics shocking and shameful of any nation, there is in the United States among the young generation misunderstanding about the abuse of women. Many American teenagers are sanguine about such abuse.

The Boston Public Heath Commission conducted a survey on teenage opinion on the beating of R&B singer Rihanna by her boyfriend Chris Brown. Half of those polled blame Rihanna for her own beating.

Why is there such gross abuse of women and indifference to it in America? Because American culture is a sick, perverse world where women are objectified into demeaned figured who exist solely to arouse and satisfy the sexual urges of men. American culture though hip-hop and Hollywood films embed misogynist values. And American men simply do not respect women the way men do elsewhere. American men are sexist slobs who think women exist to clean, cook and open their legs.

Finally, one cannot leave Christianity off the record. After all in a nation as religious as America, where 45% of the population defines itself as “born-again,” the Bible’s rendering of women to property has to blamed for the abuse of women. Yup, Christianity is a sexist faith that denies women rights and it is for that reason, in part, that such a strongly Christian nation abuses women.

Okay, pause. There are a lot of reason for the sad abuse of women in America. And there is truth in what I wrote, particularly when it comes to culture. But the aforementioned is just gross generalizations. And, no doubt, when people look at such statistics on America they will seek to find socioeconomic reasons and so on and so forth. No one will condemn the entire culture or Christianity, even in a nation as religious as the United States. But ask yourself: what would they say if these statistics where on any Muslim nation? I’ll tell what they’d say: they’d attack Islam left and right and condemn Arab culture. Why are discourse standards different? Racism, that’s why. Pure and simple.

Women are suppressed and abused every where in this man dominated world. But the sad fact is they still blame third world and Islamic countries in particular for bias and violence against women. How can they forget what they are doing to their moms and sisters? before blaming others, making your side safe makes more sense, isn't it?

Time for you to take note of happenings in one of the most progressive nations on earth !

You might be thinking that 50% of all married people will end up in divorce, but that is not what that figure reflects.

It reflects a percentage of serial marryers and divorcers. I know a few people who have been married as many as 8 times. So for each of those people, there are 7 more couples that stay together.

So it is not half of all households breaking up. It is just a small percentage, breaking up over and over and over.

@Nuya,

Its not just the rate of divorces. 50% of Americans don’t marry at all! This will be replicated in India soon.

Women are suppressed everywhere. Situation is worse in fanatic states but it is not very good in developed nations also. Patriarchal thoughts prevail everywhere. We need to change the male dominated society to ensure rights and security of women.

I was honestly quite shocked to learn that the guards in women's prisons are often men; it seems like a no-brainer that men shouldn't be in positions of authority over women who are in such a vulnerable position.

In the past, much of the abuse was hidden because of taboos that worked in men's favour. But now things are more open & hopefully conditions are improving for women in most places. However, in India the taboos are cracking but ever so slowly.

There has been no dearth of movements and organisations working for the rights, upliftment, liberation and emancipation of women. There is a lot of hue and cry about their status, role and rights. In spite of all this the women related statistics make a dismal reading. …5,000 brides are murdered or commit suicide in relation to dowry every year in India. …Female foeticide is rampant in India and China. Of 8,000 abortions conducted at a clinic in Mumbai, 7,999 were female fetuses. …Some 600,000 women - die each year from pregnancy related causes, most of which are preventable. …70% of world illiterates are women. …70% of people in abject poverty are women. …Only 1% of world assets are held by women. …In Africa for every HIV infected male there are six HIV infected females. …50% to 75% women experience domestic violence. …More than 50% of marriages end in divorce in America. …Half the population on globe lacks basic sanitation and 1/3 of the world population is without safe drinking water. …Basic education for all would cost $6 billion and water and sanitation for all would cost $9 billion. …Reproductive health service for all women would cost $12 million annually.

”5,000 brides are murdered or commit suicide in relation to dowry every year in India.”

In 2005, 1,181 women were murdered by an intimate partner. That’s an average of three women every day. Of all the women murdered in the U.S., about one-third were killed by an intimate partner.

Wow, that would mean it is almost 5 times as dangerous to be a woman in India than it is to be one in America.

@Aurelian,

Those statistics are plain bullshit! They are exaggerated and based on allegations alone. Allegations cannot be construed as facts. Moreover, the torture of men and men’s rights is never even considered. So, its time to talk about status of man rather than status of woman.

Muslim women are pets of Muslim men, everyone has known that for ages. This is not a secret. If the pets are well behaved, they are loved. If they don't obey rules, they are punished. These pets love being pets (do they have any other choice?), if they didn't the whole Muslim world will collapse. Leaving aside the tough question like 'can a Saudi woman stop being a pet', one must ask, why can't a British or American Muslim woman stop being a pet?

There have been some human rights groups that have done some surveys in Muslim countries, I don’t remember them all but the 2 that stuck out were Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan that 95% of the women asked said they had been abused. And did anyone see all the reports from India, Pakistan and Egypt of what is called ”Eve Teasing”?

It is apparently sexual harassment of women in public places.>>>>

83 percent of Egyptian women reported having been sexually harassed. Nearly half of women said the abuse occurred daily.

Only 2.4 percent of Egyptian women reported it to the police, with most saying they did not believe anyone would help. Some feared reporting harassment would hurt their reputations.

”The vast majority of women did nothing when confronted with sexual harassment,” the survey said, adding that most Egyptian women believed the victim should ”remain silent.”

Some 53 percent of men blamed women for bringing on sexual harassment, saying they enjoyed it or were dressed in a way deemed indecent. Some women agreed.

”Out of Egyptian women and men interviewed, most believe that women who wear tight clothes deserve to be harassed,” the survey said. It added most agreed women should be home by 8 p.m.

The survey said most of the Egyptian women who told of being harassed said they were dressed conservatively, with the majority wearing the Islamic headscarf. The harassment took place on the streets or on public transport, as well as in tourist destinations and foreign educational institutions.

Reports from Pakistan, some say as much as 70% of Pakistani women are raped, but the laws there protect rapists and punish the victim, so many more are victimized.

Say what you want about America’s 20%, It is still better than the almost 100% abuse that women in Muslim countries endure.

OH yea, believe it! I tried going to church/temple/Kingdom Hall etc. all of the ones I tried, maybe 15 in all, were full of the most pompous, arrogant, surly, self important abusive men you ever want to see. The women were uneducated, shallow, drudges, who were more interested in gossip than in any godly pursuit. There was always some talk of adultery, thievery, abuse or drug use going on.

In all the years I worked in a University, I never heard 1/10 of the bad behaviors that I was exposed to in the few months I spent at each church.

I finally decided to stick to office friends and secular charity groups for social interaction.

Men have dominated and pushed their will on all weaker creatures from the beginning ,giving woman no gods of their own -then judging them by their gods judgments and punishments
How mutch more abuse can man put on woman than tell them all gods are made up by man and as a good servant of man you must follow and obey our gods
Now thats brainwashing at it’s best, because the woman’s brain is conditioned to follow and believe all mans bull stories
It will never change because the weaker always follow the stronger
Simple conversation changes nothing so again i am just talking to myself

the above data are really shocking but these things happen when men and women are not bound to each other. they are not depend on each other.

If we can see the data for most of the country the exploitation are everywhere
but the diffrence in the level of exploitation.

These cases happen where they are free for more than one relationship.

OH it happens way more when the women have no choice. When women have no options they just stay and take the abuse or move to another abusive situation.

You CAN see the data, America keeps very good records and they are free for everyone to look at.

*From the National Organization for Women web site*

Young women, low-income women and some minorities are disproportionately victims of domestic violence and rape. Women ages 20-24 are at greatest risk of nonfatal domestic violence8, and women age 24 and under suffer from the highest rates of rape.9 The Justice Department estimates that one in five women will experience rape or attempted rape during their college years, and that less than five percent of these rapes will be reported.10 Income is also a factor: the poorer the household, the higher the rate of domestic violence — with women in the lowest income category experiencing more than six times the rate of nonfatal intimate partner violence as compared to women in the highest income category.11 When we consider race, we see that African-American women face higher rates of domestic violence than white women, and American-Indian women are victimized at a rate more than double that of women of other races.

So you see, poor, uneducated women who cannot support themselves are the ones who are being abused the most.

It is the same every where in the world, men who keep their women economically disadvantaged, abuse them because they know the woman has no options. Also, men have no respect for a woman who can not even read a bill or write out a check or drive to the post office to mail the bill or shop for groceries. The woman does not have to bring in an income, she just has to be able to help. Men also get disgusted when the woman knows nothing but what goes on inside her house, so that is all she talks about.

I can barely contain my grief as I attempt to teach some of these women to read. They have no experiential references except those they learned from TV and gossiping. I go home and cry because they have never been to a museum or walked on a beach or read a novel. I also cry when I think that I could have ended up the same way.

@Arvind,

The data is based on one-sided, flawed and on mere allegations. They are NOT based on convictions. The law does not recognise violence committed by women on men. If it starts recognising that, we will get a correct picture.

@Nuya,

Its all one-sided and based on statistics that is ill-collected and exaggerated to get funds for women’s groups! What about intimate partner violence against men and rape committed by women on men? The laws don’t even recognise them and hence the records don’t reflect any. So, we cannot conclude on such nasty statistics which are only meant to appease women’s groups.

http://monjib.instablogs.com/entry/crime-sex-and-women/

Rape is the fastest growing crime in India today; as many as 18 women are assaulted in some form or the other every hour across India. Analytically, the chronology compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reveals that crimes against women seems to be more deadly than terror attacks in India. According to the report of the NCRB 2007, a total of 185,312 incidents of crime against women were reported in the country during 2007 as compared to 164,765 during 2006, an increase of 12.5 percent. Of this, 85,312 incidents of crime against women and 20,771 cases of rape, 38,734 molestation and 1095 sexual harassment were reported in the country in 2007.

In more than 90 percent of the cases, the victims knew the offenders. The highest number of rape cases was reported from Madhya Pradesh, 75,930 women became victims of torture and cruelty by their husbands and in-laws. Every three minutes a woman becomes victim of a crime somewhere in India. The highest number become targets of their husbands and in-laws, says the report. Further, the number of crimes committed against women has increased continuously during the last five years.

Cases of Crimes have upsurged in thousands, a decade back in 1999, a total of 1, 35,771 cases were reported. Over 32000 murders, 19,000 rapes, 7500 dowry deaths and 36500 molestation cases are the violent crimes reported in India in 2006 against women. While Madhya Pradesh is worst off among the states, the national capital New Delhi continues to hold on to its reputation of being the most unsafe city in India. Delhi takes the top slot for crimes ranging from murders and rapes to dowry deaths and abductions. For instance while the national crime rate declined negligibly by .02 % in 2006; Delhi’s rate grew to 357.2more than double the national average of 167.7.

It reflects country’s law and order situation is plunging deep into chaos. While its capital, New Delhi remains a cauldron of crime, instead of leading the way in tackling crime, Delhi seems to be doing worse year after year. The skyrocketing rise of crimes against women and children makes me wonder why the country India cannot tackle effectively. Is there any solution? Everyone is against it, but nobody knows how to answer to it. Of there is no magical solution to it, but definitely there is a need for fundamental changes to be made in our society. The authority whether it’s state or central government or the politic administration, it must be sensitive to this social menace. India cannot be graveyard of policy failures. Make violence against women no-no in our society.
