Swine flu hysteria may be making a come back. The Center for Disease Control, a federal agency, has reported that 1 million Americans have contacted Swine flu virus or H1N1 virus.
The CDC cannot actually individual report these cases, but, instead, relies on a mathematical projection of the spread of the flu. In total, only 28,000 cases [half reported in the world] have actually reported H1N1 virus to the agency. The CDC then calculates the number of people those individuals come in contact with and has estimated that 1 million Americans have contacted it.
The virus has produced only mild illness and has been treated quickly in patients in the United States. Even though it has been spreading for months now, the virus has not shown any mutation.
Personal note: I think the whole scare about Swine flu is just another pointless media boogieman in a line that has included such stars as “SARS,” “West Nile,” and “Sharks”.
This is not to say that Swine flu has not been a tragedy. If one death arisen from Swine flu and that is a person you know then that means the world. But that does not entail the press to behave as if Swine flu is some new disease that it about to ravage mankind.
The number of deaths of Swine flu so far: 137.
Do you know how many American died from season flu last year: 36,000!
36,000 deaths! Why isn’t the media obsessed with season flu? In light of those deaths, it is just absurd to lose sleep over Swine flu.
